The exhibition presents the overall work that Giovanni Cocco has dedicated to the Burlesque genre in Italy since 2007.

Cocco photographed the women, the venues, the accessorizes of the burlesque’s world and through a sequence of pictures he shows us his visual interpretation.

The reportage follows the burlesque dancer from the original idea of the character to the making of a show. "I’ve started this project because I was attracted by the colours, the different hairstyles, the dresses, but most of all by the sense of humour of these women who, despite a society of strong clichés, do not have the least difficulty to uncover their curvy bodies. I attended both the Milanese scene of the Apollo Dancing, where the show-girls of the Voodoo De Luxe international agency perform every month, and the Roman one of the Micca club. In May 2009 this last organized the Micca Burlesque Festival counting on the presence of many international stars."

Burlesque is a humorous theatrical entertainment involving parody and sometimes grotesque exaggeration. In late 19th century England, in particular, such dramatic productions became very popular. In 20th century America, the form became associated with a variety show in which striptease is the chief attraction Burlesque was largely a middle class pursuit, where the jokes relied on the audiences' familiarity with known operas and artistic works. Through music, dance and theatrical parody beautiful middle class women mocked the aristocracy. It was a kind of ante-litteram sexy cabaret that in a few years became very popular in England.

In the following decades the burlesque performers became the nowadays show-girls. In the nineties, following the trend of the vintage culture, the new-burlesque came to life, a new costume of modern days artistic scene.
