CLANDESTINE LANDINGS

Every summer, thousands of migrants from various part of the country flow towards vegetable picking centers hoping to find employment in these fields.

At dawns first lights, the central square of small villages around Foggia, Palermo, Syracuse fill with groups of sleepy men waiting in front of bars in the hope of a day of work. The bosses' vans which come and go in broad daylight, "harvest" underpaid workforce whose daily wage will be taxed to cover transport costs from the village to the fields, where, under a scorching sun, they will harvest the first fruits ending up on the tables of the Italians.

The main characters of this story, part of a fundamental sector of the economy, agriculture, live in abandoned farmhouses or tent villages in complete illegality, condemned to being invisible and to a reticent silence, too often without access to water, light, gas or sanitary assistance

Since 2004, MSF has been denouncing the existing reality of the Italian countryside, providing sanitary and legal assistance. on the basis of the numerous evidences gathered, the exploitation of the agricultural labour has truly degenerated into slavery and seems to be part of a bigger business of clandestinity starting from the coasts of Libya and Tunisia. Many migrant children risk their lives disembarking illegally on the Sicilian shores already in possession of a boss' contact, who very often are fellow countrymen employed by Italian agricultural firms.
