BIO

Lana Slezic was born to Croatian parents in 1973 in Toronto, Canada. She has been a professional photographer since 2000. Slezic believes in cohesive bodies of work that communicate an issue or concept and therefore focuses her efforts on project-based work.

In 2005 Slezic was invited to participate in the World Press Joop Swart Masterclass in Amsterdam, one of 12 young photographers selected world-wide.

In 2007 she won the Luis Valtuena Special Prize for Humanitarian Photography for her body of work on Afghan women. Later that year she published her first book “Forsaken” which in 2008 was chosen as one of the Top Ten Photo Books of the Year by American Photo Magazine.

In addition to several other awards, most recently Slezic was given a World Press Photo Award in the Portrait Story category.

Slezic has also been invited to speak about her experiences in Afghanistan, most notably on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.

She has exhibited in Canada, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Croatia, France, United States, United Kingdom and Turkey. Publications include National Geographic, The New York Times, Time Magazine and many others. Lana has lived in Afghanistan, Turkey, UAE and is currently based in New Delhi, India.

AFGHAN WOMEN

“This body of work represents a very emotional journey that has allowed me to learn about the lives of Afghan women and girls in an intimate setting. Unfortunately, most of them understand subservience and fear all too well. The theme ‘ordinary‘ is appropriate because it is, sadly, quite ordinary to witness the kind of conditions women are forced to live under in Afghanistan. What should be extraordinary is not. On a grass roots level, the human rights and gender equality issues are endless although the effects of centuries of oppression cannot be expected to disappear overnight”.
