Francesco ZIZOLA | Noor Agency | BORN SOMEWHERE

BIO

Francesco Zizola has photographed the major crisis and conflicts of the last 20 years.

His last book "Iraq", published by Amnesty International (2007), documents the beginning of the second Iraqi war, an ongoing conflict too often without witnesses.

His book "Born Somewhere" (2004) is the result of 13 years of reportage documenting childhood conditions in 30 countries.

Francesco Zizola has been granted with many international awards among which the World Press Photo of the Year in 1996 for a reportage documenting the tragedy of land-mines in Angola. Over the last years he received other 7 World Press Photo Category Awards and 4 Pictures of the Year Awards.

In 2003 Henri Cartier Bresson chose one of his pictures for the exhibition and the book LE CHOIX D'HENRI CARTIER BRESSON of the Foundations HCB holding Cartier Bresson's favourite photographies.

In 2006, the director Liliana Ginanneschi dedicated a documentary L'occhio sensibile to him, produced by Rai Educational.

He lives in Rome where in 2006 he founded 10b PHOTOGRAPHY, a workshop space of ideas and photographic culture.

In 2007, together with a group of colleagues he creates NOOR agency in Amsterdam.

BORN SOMEWHERE

Francesco Zizola, one of the most important contemporary photoreporter, spent the last 13 years documenting the conditions of children around the world; from the son of wars in Iraq to the small workers in Indonesia, to the rich and alienated in Los Angeles.

Born somewhere portrays the life of children in 30 different countries. Consistently, he visited their countries which are drained by wars, such as Angola, Sudan, Afghanistan or Iraq. His pictures tell us about child labour in Brazil and Indonesia as well as AIDS orphans in Mozambique and Kenya. But they show also how privileged children drift away from their families and give an insight into the life of young entrepreneurs and child actors in Japan, New York and Los Angeles and Italy, till they end on the more recent images taken in Uganda where thousands of children sleep outdoors to escape the kidnapping and forced enrollment in the army, in South Africa and finally in Chad, among refugee camps in Darfur

An exhibition born from Zizola's need to tell important international facts via the lives of children.

Born Somewhere is also a book published by Fusi Orari.
